The Midwifery Education Program (MEP) sees its role in education and in the midwifery profession as part of a broader commitment to social justice. We affirm our responsibility to foster an anti-oppressive environment, not only within the MEP, but also within the wider community. The MEP recognizes that inequity is maintained by discrimination and systemic marginalization of people based on, but not exclusive to, ability, age, class, economic status, educational background, ethnicity, gender, geographical location, language, race, religion, reproductive and parenting decisions, and sexual orientation.
The following identity and admission survey has been designed with the MEP’s statement on equity, diversity, and inclusion in mind. The survey is composed of three sections:
1. demographic, social, and economic questions,
2. the two optional facilitated admission processes, and
3. clinical placement region preferences.
The demographic section of the survey has been requested by students to hold the program accountable to its goal of diversifying the MEP and the profession. Implementation of the survey was endorsed by the MEP’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Advisory Committee. This committee is composed of current students, faculty, alumni, midwifery stakeholders and partners.
The purpose of this survey is to gather information to establish baseline data on 1) the diversity of our applicant pool, 2) candidates who are invited to the multiple mini-interviews, 3) candidates who participate in the facilitated admission pathways, 4) candidates who receive an offer of admission to the Program and 5) where candidates would choose to be placed during clinical placements in the province. The data collected will help us to monitor progress over time with respect to our work to create a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive program through the admission process. The data will also help to inform changes to our recruitment strategies, policies, and processes, if appropriate.
This survey is not anonymous. We are requesting your name and email address so we can track your progress through the admission process. Your answers to the questions to section one will NOT be used to determine whether or not you are admitted to the program. Please set aside 10-20 minutes to complete the survey. Before starting the survey, please review the MEP admission process, and if applicable the Facilitated Black Admission Pathway and/or the Facilitated Indigenous Admission Pathway, as well as the options for clinical placements.
Data collected in the survey will only be shared in an aggregated and anonymous format. You will not be identified in any academic publications, conference presentations and/or reports resulting from this project. Completion and submission of this survey will constitute your consent to participate in the project.
We have done our best to present questions in a fair and reasonable manner. If you feel that the questions are not articulated well, please suggest alternatives in the comments sections at the end of the survey. Your feedback is welcomed and appreciated.
