Why are we doing this study?
We are interested in learning about people’s preferences regarding cigarette packaging and brand appeal. We invite you to participate in this study.

What will happen during this study?
You will be asked to participate in a short survey.  The survey typically takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

Will anything bad happen while participating in the study?
It is possible that you may feel uncomfortable answering some questions in the survey.

What good things could happen if I participate?
We hope to learn more about people’s views about cigarette packaging, plain packaging, brand appeal, and the salience of health warnings. You will be entered into a random draw for a money prize for completing the survey. You will not otherwise benefit directly.

Will I be compensated for my time?
At the end of the survey, you will be entered into a draw for a chance to win $250. Your odds of winning may depend on the number of people who complete the survey, but we guarantee odds of no less than 1 in 50. We will ask you for your e-mail address (note: your e-mail address will be stored separately from your survey answers) so that we can contact you if you are one of the winners.

Will there be any costs to me?
There will be no costs to you.

Who will know what I wrote or the selections I made during the survey?
Only senior members of the McMaster University research team will have access to the data. Nothing you write or select during the session will be directly attributed to you and you will never be personally identified in any way. Information provided as part of obtaining consent or entering the prize draw will not be linked in any way with any of your survey responses.

What if I change my mind about participating in the study?
Your participation is voluntary and once you begin, you are free to stop at any point in time, even after giving your consent. The only consequence if you decide to stop participating before the survey is complete is that you will forfeit the chance to be entered into the $250 draw. Any data collected up to the time you decide to leave will be retained and may be analyzed.

An important note about the use of cellphones and tablets
This survey contains images that are formatted for optimal viewing on a computer screen.  To complete this survey, you must use a computer or a device with a screen larger than 9".  We do not recommend that you complete the survey on a cellphone or small tablet because some images will not appear correctly on smaller screens and your responses will be invalidated. If you are currently viewing this on a cellphone or small tablet, we ask that you stop and go to a computer using the same link provided to you in your e-mail invitation.  Surveys completed on a cellphone or tablet may not be eligible for the prize draw.  We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
