Partner dance study email recruitment

This study is being conducted by Martin Miguel, a McMaster post-doctoral fellow under the supervision of Dr. Laurel Trainor and Dr. Jonathan Cannon at the department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour.

This is a study about the learning process of non-verbal communication in partner dance. In this study, participants will be asked to perform simple partner dance steps by holding hands with another participant. Movement and synchronization will be recorded using motion-capture technology at the LIVELab, a research-based performance theatre and testing centre at McMaster University.

In partner dancing, one dancer takes the role of Leader and indicates the movements to be done by the pair. The other person takes the role of Follower and follows the indications. We are looking for participants for both roles. For the Leader role, we are looking for participants with at least 6 months of partnered dance training as a leader in any dance style. For the Follower role, we are looking for participants that have no prior formal partner dance training (they must not have taken more than 10 partner dance lessons; such as ballroom, salsa or tango dancing). All participants must not have any movement restrictions.

The study is carried out in 2-hour data collection sessions of up to 12 participants. Leaders are required to participate in a training session before participating in the studies. The entire training process will take around 2 hours and will take place in-person at the LIVELab. Then, they will be invited to participate in as many sessions as they can out of the 8 sessions we are planning. Followers may only participate in one. Participants will receive $34 as compensation for each study session completed. Leaders will receive $34 for each of the first three completed sessions (training or data collection) and then $40 for each following completed session.

In this form, you may provide us with a contact email that we will use to contact you with prospective experimental session dates. We ask you to tell us which role you would be taking in the study (Leader or Follower). We also ask you for broad time availability that we will use to propose dates that work for most interested participants.
