Phased Increase of Research Activity Plan for Research Facilities - Phase 1

General Information

The University recognizes that research has continued in earnest since the restrictions were imposed and applauds the research community for continuing to advance their work remotely through electronic devices. Working from home remains the preference but, as some research can only be done on campus, the University has planned for a gradual, phased increase of research activity. Any return to campus during Phase 1 will require each Research Facility to submit this plan for approval by their Chair and / or Associate Dean Research (ADR) / Vice-President Research.

Please note that each Research Facility may have only one active plan at a time for each phase, and should include all members of the team that might want to return to campus or undertake fieldwork during Phase 1 in a single application. Research Facilities may amend plans later by submitting a new application that contains information about all members of the team that might need to attend the campus or undertake fieldwork, should plans change. Please note though, that plans submitted to address different phases are considered separate. As such, a Research Facility may need a Phase 0, Phase 1 and Phase 2 plan.

Facility name, Director Name, McMaster email address and Primary Contact Number for Director.
(This question is mandatory)
Faculty Affiliation.
(This question is mandatory)
Home Department.
(This question is mandatory)
Is this a new Phase 1 submission or an amendment to a previous Phase 1 submission?
(This question is mandatory)
Phase 1 does not signal a return of researchers for any reason other than to perform research that is impossible to perform in a remote manner. No individual will come to campus to take part in activities that include (but are not limited to) group or individual meetings, literature review, paper writing, grant preparation, thesis defence, comprehensive exams, etc. Similarly, while trained undergraduates and graduate students will be permitted to work as described above, “hands on” training of such individuals is not permitted.

Briefly explain the nature of the support your facility provides.

(This question is mandatory)
Total number of research facility personnel who will be on campus.
(This question is mandatory)
List the names of the team members who will be on campus.
(This question is mandatory)
Confirm that McMaster’s pandemic specific Workplace Health and Safety Guidance is understood and will be followed by all members of the research team.
Confirm that no research will involve face-to-face human participants.
(This question is mandatory)
Confirm that you have made plans for a safe and rapid as possible shutdown if called for by the University and/or Public Health officials.
(This question is mandatory)
Briefly (in 500 words or less), explain how you propose to track access to lab space and manage equipment, traffic flow, shared areas etc to ensure appropriate workplace health and safety guidance protocols are followed. Where your Chair / ADR has asked for a more detailed plan, include a link to the full plan in your answer.
(This question is mandatory)
Confirm that protocols on physical/social distancing, traffic flow, access to bench space, equipment, etc., as well as the necessity of logging entries and exits have been agreed with all research team members.
